Recently, game engine company Epic Games received a US$1.5 billion (approximately 10.8 billion yuan) investment from entertainment giant Disney. According to the official press release, the cooperation is not only financial, but the two parties will also “jointly create a new gaming and entertainment universe to further expand Disney’s popular stories and experiences.”
In a statement, Disney emphasized that the company has long used Epic’s Unreal Engine in film and television editing and theme park projects such as “Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.” Disney’s new game universe will also be built using Unreal Engine, the company said.
Currently, character content from Disney’s Marvel and Star Wars are the first third-party content to enter Epic’s super-popular game “Fortnite.” Disney said its new “persistent universe” will be interoperable with “Fortnite”, while providing games and “allowing consumers to play, watch, buy and participate in Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and other content, characters and Multiple opportunities for stories.”
Regarding the investment in Epic, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that this cooperation is “Disney’s largest ever investment in the gaming field and provides huge opportunities for growth and expansion.”
This is far from Disney’s first foray into the gaming industry. In the past few years, Disney has had many interactions with the gaming industry. However, it should be noted that the transaction is still subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approval.
